Allen Meadows 91-94/100 | Drink: 2035+. Producer note: Jean-Nicolas Méo described 2020 as another "hot and super-dry vintage that was much more precocious than 2019, indeed at one point in the season we were more than 3 weeks ahead of normal. However, in contrast with 2018 and 2019, it wasn't truly blazing hot except for the first week of August. The fruit though became progressively more concentrated through a mix of the heat, the drought and the evaporating effects of a constant wind, which cost us quite a bit of potential yield. Incredibly, we picked from the 23rd of August, which is the earliest every for us. The fruit was clean so there wasn't much sorting but the other reason that there wasn't much sorting is because there wasn't much fruit as the average yield was only 25 hl/ha. I did my usual relatively soft vinification as the skins were quite thick, so careful management of the extraction was critical. As to the wines, what I find so surprising about them is just how fresh and vibrant they are because remarkably enough, given the heat, the pHs are relatively low. I am extremely happy with the 2020s and they remind me of 2003 but with better acid balance." Tasting note: Méo commented that he believes that the 2020 version is the best that they have made. Exuberantly fresh yet decidedly ripe aromas include those of red and dark currant that are laced with floral, spice and oak hints. The firm, muscular and mineral-driven big-bodied flavors possess evident power and excellent length on the chewy, structured and lingering finish that flirts with rusticity.
