Allen Meadows 91-94/100 | Drink: 2035+. Producer note: Jean-Nicolas Méo described 2021 as a "very difficult growing season, particularly for the whites, as we had frost, oidium and botrytis so it was necessary to be constantly vigilant. I was really worried about the end of season rot but in fact, it turned to not be much of a problem after all. We picked from the 21st to the 29th of September and despite all of the problems, there really wasn't much sorting necessary. The pinot berries were relatively ripe with large and thin skinned that had plenty of juice in them so while the overall yield was off by around 30%, the volume per bunch was elevated. Potential alcohols came in between 11.7 and 12.8% and I chaptalized to around 13%. I really didn't change my approach to vinification, but we did taste constantly to be sure that we weren't extracting underripe tannins. As to the wines, they're actually extremely pretty with excellent freshness and terroir transparency. They should age well over the mid-term while being approachable on the younger side and stylistically, they remind somewhat of 1992 or 2007." I was impressed by the quality that I found here in 2021 and I agree with Méo's view that the wines should be approachable earlier than usual.
